For the new archaeological museum we propose an architecture which is storyteller of a man, of his epoch, and his territory.
The new museum occupies a focal point for the town of Bolzano. The plot is located between the historical city centre and the new city, along the bank of the Talvera river. Together with Museion and the Civic Museum, the whole ensemble is meant to become the "Museums shore".
The design develops around a path, a gentle slope, with the morphology of a mountain path, offering the chance to the visitor to experience part of the charm of this territory.
The path is enriched by the narrative of Ötzi's times. The path leads to a room which is simulating a glacier. All in a sudden the visitor is surrounded by the feeling of the place where Otzi's death took place: a hostile place, that Otzi used to frequent to hunt, to seek for minerals, or other products for its activities.
The ice is the main suggestion of this design proposal: to simulate the materuiality of the ice, we use translucid blocks. The passage in the glacier leads to the Wunderkammer. This is a panoramic room, completely glassed, on top of the INA's building. The volume recalls a floating Ark, which allows the view of the Dolomitic peaks of Rosengarten and Sciliar mountains, and able to carry us in those gorgeous places.
The descent reserves the most important surprise: a big room is dedicated to the Similaun Mummy. The Mummy is resting in a big refrigerated machine, and it will be visible through a glazed porthole. A scientific-didactic path explains the importance of the studies around Ötzi, such as the one about ancient DNA.
An extraordinary path and a remarkable narration, able to captivate and let us feel the spirit of the "genius" of these places.
Per il nuovo museo archeologico si propone un’architettura capace di raccontare la storia di un uomo, di un’epoca e del suo territorio.
Il nuovo museo occupa un luogo baricentrico per Bolzano, tra la vecchia e la nuova città, lungo la sponda del Talvera che, potrebbe diventare la “Riva dei Musei” assieme al Museo civico e al Museion.
Il progetto si sviluppa in un percorso in salita dalla dolce pendenza, ma dalla morfologia di un sentiero di montagna, proprio per farci assaporare l’esperienza e la magia di questo territorio. Il percorso è accompagnato dal racconto ai tempi di Ötzi, e ci conduce alla sala che simula un ghiacciaio. Di colpo il visitatore si trova nel luogo dove la “Mummia del Similaun” ha trovato la morte: un luogo ostile che lui frequentava per cacciare o magari per cercare minerali o altri prodotti per le sue attività.
Il ghiaccio è il tema principale di questa suggestione progettuale: una serie di blocchi sovrapposti, dalle pareti traslucide che simulano la matericità delle lastre di ghiaccio. La salita dentro il ghiacciaio prosegue nella “Wunderkammer”, una sala panoramica, vetrata, posta sopra l’edificio storico dell’ex INA: una arca galleggiante che, ci permette la vista sulle cime dolomitiche del Rosengarten e dello Sciliar, e di trasportarci in quei luoghi.
La discesa ci riserva la sorpresa più importante: la grande sala dedicata alla Mummia del Similaun. L’oblò di vetro ci permette la vista della mummia che riposa nella grande macchina refrigerata. Un percorso didattico-scientifico spiega l’importanza delle ricerche che si stanno conducendo sulla mummia stessa, come quelle sul DNA antico.
